If you’ve been learning to crochet, you may have seen the terms “crochet along” or “CAL” floating around internet and social media. There are many of these events happening in the crochet world at a given time, and I want to have a place where you can easily find a list of projects to choose from throughout the year.
I’ve been providing a list of blog hops and crochet along events to my email subscribers for a few years now, and it is a fan favorite. However, I always struggled with how best to represent previously ended CALs so that you could get back to them in the future should you not participate during the actual CAL duration.
Many crocheters, myself included, do not have the ability to keep up with crochet alongs because life happens. Or they simply want to go at a different pace than the host provides. Plus, with all of the amazing crochet alongs over the years, you can use this guide as a jumping off point anytime you like.
Below the list of CALs, I’m going to answer some FAQs you may have about crochet along events, so be sure to check that out if you have questions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CROCHET ALONG EVENTS
WHAT DOES CAL STAND FOR IN CROCHETING?
CAL stands for crochet along (or crochet-a-long).
WHAT IS A CROCHET ALONG?
A crochet along is where groups of crocheters use the same pattern to make their own version of the project at one time. The pattern is often broken into multiple parts and released on a schedule such as weekly, monthly or every Monday and Thursday for 10 weeks. When each new section is released, participants can then work up that part before the next section comes out.
Some crochet along events are called MCALs or “mystery crochet alongs” because the finished project is kept a secret until the end. Participants will know what kind of supplies are needed, but get to have fun guessing what they are making as it goes along.
WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS ARE MADE DURING A CROCHET ALONG?
Pretty much any item can be made during a crochet along. Common CALs include:
- Blankets
- Accessories such as scarves, shawls, and hats
- Other home decor items such as pillows and wall hangings
- Amigurumi stuffed animals
- Themed CALs like “weekend mini CAL” or “pick a pattern from a new collection”
HOW TO DO A CROCHET ALONG?
You can participate in a crochet along however it works best for you and your life. Often CALs may have giveaways or other prizes for those who complete the project within the duration, which can add to the fun. But if you cannot meet the CAL timing, that doesn’t mean you can’t participate!
There are many crocheters who are busy with life and other projects, or they discover a crochet along just before it ends. Join in any time! As a designer, I can assure you that we absolutely LOVE seeing crochet along photos no matter when you finish the project.
