Grid view of each race flag design

Ladies and gentlemen, start your ENGINES! You will be repeating those famous words as you crochet this race flag garland for your favorite race fan. If you’re looking for a cute gift to give race fans in your life, or decor for your little one’s bedroom, this is the banner for you.

This crochet bunting uses beginner stitches in five different designs to make nine race flags. There are five solid color flags, a checkered flag, slippery surface flag, passing flag, and a black and white X flag. I have to admit, when I set out to design this garland, I didn’t know a few of the flags existed let alone what they meant. It was fun to learn something new along the way.

You make each flag separately and then attach them with a mix of chains and single crochet stitches. This means you can put them in any order you like and really customize it to the person you’re making this for.

Don’t want to make all nine flags? Make a smaller garland with only the flags you want. You could alternate solid black and solid white, or make the entire garland out of only checkered flags. The possibilities are endless!

Introducing the Crochet Race Flag Garland

Growing up in Indiana, one of the biggest months is May. Every Memorial Day weekend is when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indy 500 – the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. My parents have a race party every year, and our family, friends, and neighbors get together for a hot, sticky day spent watching the race and playing outside.

Everywhere you go, you’ll see checkered flags hanging and “Welcome Race Fans” signs. Our community really goes all out as the IndyCar drivers spend the last few weeks of the month practicing and qualifying.

If you’re intimidated by the color changes, this can be a good project to get your feet wet. The color changes in these flags are not overly complex. They’re made using tapestry crochet, which is a technique where you hold the color not being used while you create your stitches. The unused color gets carried through the piece on the wrong side of the fabric so that as you make stitches, the unused color will be hidden and secured.

You can buy the ad-free, PDF of this pattern on Etsy, Ravelry, and LoveCrafts.
