Introducing the Crochet Football Garland Pattern
Whether you choose to hang it in your living room, across your mantel, or even as a centerpiece for your game-day buffet, this garland is sure to score big when it comes to expressing your love of the game. And if you’re the type who attends games in person rather than watch from home, this garland is the perfect touch of home for your tailgate party spread!
At my house, football games seem to consume our weekends. Both of my boys play on Saturday mornings before our beloved Purdue Boilermakers are our go-to game to watch, and then on Sundays, we swap the black and gold for blue and white to cheer on our hometown Colts.
As a crochet pattern goes, this football garland is pretty simple. First, you make a triangle in the brown, using single crochet stitches. Because it is a triangle shape, there are some rows that require decreasing stitches by either skipping a stitch or single crocheting two stitches together. After that, you will add a border in brown to help the edges look nice and neat before using your yarn needle and two strands of white yarn to stitch on the laces.
I really enjoyed using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn for this football garland. If needed, I can toss these flags in the wash, and the cotton is sturdy enough to hang straight without curling. You can block your flags to ensure they hang extra straight, but that’s up to you. Let’s get to making these football flags now!

Do not fasten off. Continue to the border.
Add the Border
Ch 2, sc around the flag putting one st in each row along the sides of the flag and one sc in each st along the foundation. * sc, ch 2, sc * in each corner. When you get back to the beginning, sl st to join to the beginning of the border. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add the Laces
With Color B and using your yarn needle, follow the chart to identify the holes where the laces can be stitched. Start by pushing your needle up from the wrong side to the right side. Sample is made using 2 strands held together, or you can stitch the laces twice with a single strand.
Make the long lace down the middle first, and then make each of the cross laces on top. Weave in ends on the wrong side.
Connect the Garland Flags
You can use any number of chains to start or in between flags, but here is an example:
In color A, ch 30, * single crochet to join a flag, sc in each st along the foundation, ch 10 *, repeat from * to * until all flags are attached, ch 30. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Alternatively, you can use jute or rope to string your bunting together.
