It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas tree skirt season! That’s how the song goes, right? This crochet tree skirt pattern is a design that I am very excited about because I love the holidays, especially Christmas.
This tree skirt is really beginner-friendly. It may look harder than that, but it’s not. If you can single crochet, double crochet into the front and back post, you can make this tree skirt for your family!
But what about the monogram lettering? That looks HARD!
Let me tell you about my secret hack – cross-stitch! While I do love colorwork in my crochet and am fairly confident with techniques to carry the yarn and invisible color changes, this project is not one of them.
Why? For starters, there is no way that I could create something that you could love if you had to figure out mid-crochet, where to position your letters. Second, I’m here to create designs that anyone can tackle, including beginners.
I want you to create a tree skirt that you will love and cherish for years to come, so the pattern includes a photo tutorial to walk you through how to cross stitch the letters. It also includes letter charts and a blank grid so that you can map out your own design.
Introducing the Rustic Christmas Tree Skirt
I learned to crochet as a kid, but then had to re-learn as an adult. My very first project was to make Christmas stockings! It didn’t seem so hard to learn how to knit, right? While I was dragging my feet on learning to knit (I still haven’t learned) I came across a crochet stocking pattern that was perfect, and off I went in search of the perfect yarn.
Lion Brand Heartland Thick and Quick yarn was love at first sight. This yarn has multiple tones in it that add richness and depth, and they fit perfectly with our holiday decor. So I made our perfect set of stockings, but then my tree skirt started looking a bit out of place.
This tree skirt went through several iterations before I landed on the final design. I really wanted it to be circular, but without the pinwheel effect often seen in other circular items like stuffed animals or hats.
After building the main body in single crochet stitches, the border gets a textured effect with some front post and back post double crochet stitches. I love looking at the bright right color from under the tree.

- Ch 2 in the border counts as a stitch
- Lettering is added by cross-stitching on the top of the finished tree skirt.
- Follow the grid chart to make each letter using a yarn needle.
- Finished letters are approximately 4.25” tall each.
- Space letters approximately 1 stitch apart
- Add letters in rows 39-50 so that they can be seen while under your tree
- Center your lettering design in the middle of the tree skirt
- Work your letters outward from the center letter. This ensures your letters will be spaced equally on the tree skirt.
