Smiling woman wearing a light great sweater and a colorful crochet cowl with vibrant Halloween icons on it

As the leaves begin to change and a cool, crisp breeze sweeps through the air, the enchanting season of Halloween approaches. It’s a time of magic, mystery, and delightful spookiness, where creativity knows no bounds, especially if you have little kids at home. What better way to celebrate this bewitching season than by making yourself a one-of-a-kind crochet cowl that captures the essence of Halloween?

Imagine wrapping yourself in the warmth of richly colored yarns, each stitch woven with care and infused with the spirit of the season. Whether you’re planning to attend festive gatherings, explore haunted houses, or accompany little trick-or-treaters on their candy quests, this Halloween crochet cowl will be your perfect accessory throughout the entire season.

Introducing the Boo-tiful Halloween Crochet Cowl

I’m so excited to introduce you to this fun and festive crochet pattern that will allow you to craft your very own Halloween-inspired cowl. This pattern seamlessly combines the cozy comfort of a cowl with the vibrant energy of Halloween, making it an accessory you’ll be eager to wear not only during October but all season long.

The Boo-tiful Halloween cowl is made using crochet colorwork in the round. If you’re new to crochet colorwork, it is a technique where multiple colors of yarn are used in the same piece to create intricate patterns and designs. To keep it neat and tidy on the wrong side of the cowl, I recommend using tapestry crochet, which involves crocheting over the unused color when switching between different colored yarns within the same round.

There is a pattern chart as well as written instructions below so you can follow along with your preferred method. And because this pattern has words in the design, you do need to be careful to crochet in the correct direction based on whether you are right- or left-handed. I’ve got it all outlined in the pattern notes for you, so you don’t have to worry.

A soft-sided basket full of colorful sport weight yarn

Another thing I want to bring to your attention is the use of the modified single crochet stitch, also known as the msc. You can certainly use regular single crochet stitches, but I encourage you to try the modified stitch. It is made almost exactly like a single crochet, but with the tiniest change for one step, you’ll be crocheting along with it in no time. The modified single crochet stitch will help hide your unused color and manage the tension a little better. There are directions below and YouTube will also have tutorials to watch too.

With this crochet cowl pattern, you’ll not only stay cozy during the chilly autumn evenings but also carry the spirit of Halloween with you, wherever your adventures take you!

You can buy the ad-free, PDF of this pattern in my Etsy shop, Ravelry store, and LoveCrafts.

    • Color D: White – 44 yards
    • Color E: Shamrock – 15 yards

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • msc – modified single crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • fsc – foundation single crochet (optional)
  • st – stitch
  • rep – repeat
  • * * – repeat instructions between asterisks as directed

Special Stitches

  • msc – modified single crochet
  • All modified single crochets are created in the back loop only. This helps the stitches stack nicely on top of each other.
  • Here are the written directions for making this the msc:
    • Insert your hook under the BLO, yarn under and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops

Pattern Notes:

  • US Terms (US to UK terminology conversion)
  • Multiples of 64
  • Cowl is made in the round
  • At the end of each round, slip stitch to the first stitch to complete the round, then Ch 1 to start the next round. Do not turn.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
  • Written instructions are separated for right-handed vs. left-handed crocheters
  • Carry the unused yarn and stitch over it using tapestry crochet technique
  • Pattern chart is worked using modified single crochet (msc). Each square in the chart represents one stitch
  • Since all of the stitches in the cowl are the modified single crochet, the written instructions tell you how many of each color to make
    • For example: “*A x1, MC x3*, rep from * to * 2 more times” means that you will make one msc in Color A, then use the Main Color for 3 msc stitches, and you will repeat all of that two more times
  • Chart is worked from the bottom up
    • Right-handed crocheters should work the chart from right to left for each round
    • Left-handed crocheters should work the chart from left to right for each round
  • The pattern chart is repeated 3 times to make the cowl but can be adjusted to any number of repeats to get your desired size
