There’s something extra comforting about working with squishy, super bulky yarn, isn’t there? It is perfect for crocheting hats like this one because in just a few hours your head has something to keep it nice and toasty.
And I know you have a lot of other people in your who love your handmade gifts, so the Chunky Cozy hat pattern can be made in six different sizes, from infant to adult extra-large. There isn’t a lot of stitch counting required, and it’s worked from the bottom up using mostly beginner stitches. But I consider it an intermediate pattern due to the bobble stitches or half double crochets in the 3rd loop.

Introducing the Chunky Cozy Crochet Hat Pattern
I designed this hat a few years ago when I discovered that we only had one winter hat that would fit the twins. Instead of buying something new, I realized I could make one in a day and she was ready for snow in no time!
There was nothing cuter than her little toddler head all bundled up with an oversized pom while we pulled her around in a sled. And the yarn stretches enough that two years later it still fits. But this time, I made one for each of the kids, and myself.
The written instructions are down below. If you find step-by-step photos for the bobble and hdc third loop helpful, you should grab the premium PDF pattern from my Etsy, Ravelry, or LoveCrafts shops.

Pattern Notes:
- US Terms (US to UK terminology conversion)
- Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch
- Ch 2 counts as a stitch
- Bobble stitch rows may not fully complete the repeat
- Bobble stitches are worked on the wrong side of the project. So after you complete the stitch, the bobble should be popping out of the right side ofthe fabric.
- Count the number of stitches in round 1, and use this as your stitch count for each round until you reach the decreasing rounds
- If the stitch count for the first round is an odd number of stitches, your last stitch in the decreasing rounds will be one hdc instead of hdc2tog
- Use the measurement below for the length of the brim
- Infant – 13″ (33.0 cm)
- Toddler – 15″ (38.1 cm)
- Child – 17″ (43.2 cm)
- Teen – 19″ (48.3 cm)
