Introducing the St. Peregrine Hat Crochet Pattern
St. Peregrine is the patron saint of those suffering from cancer and other diseases. So I wanted this hat to be a tribute to all of the cancer warriors out there. I chose the color white to represent lung cancer. My aunt has been fighting lung cancer all year, so it is important to me to bring awareness to her fight and the fight against cancer.
Because so many cancer patients have to deal with hair loss, I know it’s important to use a yarn that won’t be itchy and will keep you warm. Lion Brand’s Feels Like Butta is like a soft chenille blanket. There’s not a scratchy note to it, and it definitely lives up to its buttery name.
I also have to give a huge thank you to Lion Brand for providing me with the yarn for this pattern.
Once you’re done with your hat, there is a matching shawl pattern that works perfectly as a prayer shawl or everyday accessory.
Keep reading to follow the written instructions for each size. However, if you would prefer to have a printable, ad-free PDF that has additional pictures for the steps, you can purchase this pattern on Etsy, Ravelry, and LoveCrafts.
What is the Crochet Cancer Challenge?
For the past 9 years, Christine of Sweet Potato 3 designs hosts the Crochet Cancer Challenge. This is a way for crocheters to use their time and talents to bring awareness to cancer.
Crochet designers contribute hat patterns that are available for a free download in exchange for your pledge to donate at least one hat made from their pattern.
The patterns are often designed in honor of someone we know who is fighting or previously had cancer and they are available to download for free for 48 hours. As designers, we love to participate in challenges and blog hops, but the charitable ones mean the most to us. We’re honored that you would use our pattern to make something to donate. It’s incredible to see your work!

Pattern Notes:
- US Terms (US to UK terminology conversion)
- Ch 2 counts as a stitch
- You will make the brim first and then the body of the hat
- The body of the hat is worked in rounds
- To make a slouchy hat or have the ability to fold the brim, add extra rows until the desired fit
- The seam will be on a diagonal, however, it will be nearly invisible due to the ch 2 counting as a stitch
- After making the brim, count the number of rows used and use that number as the number of stitches to put in the body of the hat
- The number of stitches in Round 1 of the body may result in the other rounds ending on a puff stitch or not completing all 7 BLO HDC before reaching the end of each round

Repeat rounds 2-3 until hat from brim to top reaches the designated height in the finished dimensions table. Cut yarn and fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using your yarn needle, weave the long tail in and out of the top row, all the way around the top of the hat. Pull the tail so that it cinches the hat closed. Continue sewing around the top to close the hat. Weave in ends.
Add pom (optional).
