A blanket square laying on a wooden backdrop, made from cobalt blue yarn.

Welcome to the Granny’s Comfort Square, a delightful addition to any granny stitch blanket pattern collection! As square #12 in the Granny Stitch Blanket CAL hosted by Madame Stitch, this design brings together the classic appeal of the traditional granny stitch with a modern, textured twist.

The Granny’s Comfort Square showcases beginner-friendly stitches like single and double crochets, combined with more advanced techniques, including the front post treble crochet (FPtr). What sets this design apart is the way the FPtr stitches are worked, and I think you will love that the granny stitch is featured within many of the rounds, mixed among the rest of the stitches.

Introducing the Granny’s Comfort Blanket Square

When designing the Granny’s Comfort Square, I wanted to embrace the coziness and timeless charm of the traditional granny stitch, but incorporate a little twist, something that would make this square stand out while still being approachable for most crocheters. That’s where the front post treble crochet (FPtr) came in. By working the FPtr stitches two rows below, you will add a unique texture and create subtle geometric lines that play beautifully against the softness of the granny stitch rounds.

The square is worked in the round, but with a small adjustment—you’ll turn your work after each round. This gives you a chance to practice turning your granny square, which can feel quite different if you’re used to working in the same direction throughout.

TIP: It might be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round so that you can keep track of where you are starting and stopping.

  • You may choose to replace the starting ch 2 with a stacked single crochet (ssc)
  • The FPtr st is worked around the dc two rows below
  • If you want to use multiple colors in your square, change yarn at the beginning of a round. Do not carry the yarn through when changing colors. Cut the yarn at each color change.
