Close up of a soft basket made of yarn holding skeins of yarn

I’m so excited to share this fun and festive overlay mosaic crochet basket pattern perfect for Easter – the He Is Risen basket!

It’s worked in the round using the overlay mosaic technique, which is something I learned last year and have since gotten hooked on it. If you’ve never tried mosaic crochet before and are feeling adventurous, be sure to check out the video tutorial. I walk you through how to read the chart, and the different types of stitches (including the locking stitch that will keep the inside flat and gap-free).

In this pattern, you will find a video tutorial, plus written instructions for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters.

Introducing the ‘He Is Risen’ Mosaic Crochet Basket

I learned how to make and design overlay mosaic patterns almost a year ago, and I’ve fallen in love with the technique and process of making mosaic projects. One of the biggest hangups to mosaic crochet is dealing with all the yarn tails.

Yes, blankets and other items can use an envelope border, but crocheting in the round is even better – you simply carry the yarn up the rounds as you go along and there are virtually zero tails to weave in!

Easter season is often full of bunnies and candy, which is so much fun, but it’s also time to remember that Christ died for us. This basket is something that can help you focus on the Lord as you work up each round. And when you’re done you can use it to hold your WIPs, yarn, kids’ toys, or anything else you want to display.

For this entire basket, you only need to know how to make single and double crochet stitches. What makes it an intermediate pattern is how the double crochets are made two rounds below. But don’t worry, I walk you through all of this in the YouTube tutorial below.

If you want to learn how to design your own Mosaic charts, I highly recommend this overlay mosaic designing online course from Juniper and Oakes. It walks you through all of the steps to design charts. Feel free to contact me if you have more questions about it too.

About the Stitches

Before you can get started with this crochet basket, here are some details you need to know.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

  • Worsted Weight Yarn in 2 colors, such as Caron One Pound (Alternate: Lion Brand Heartland)
    • Color A – 195 yards (3.8 oz)
    • Color B – 175 yards (3.4 oz)
  • H-8 (5mm) Hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Gauge: single crochet 13 st x 16 rows = 4″ square

Finished Dimensions: Approximately 13″ diameter by 6″ high (33.0 cm x 15.2 cm)

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • Rd – round

Pattern Notes:

  • US Terms (US to UK terminology conversion)
  • Basket is made in the round, do not turn
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch
  • Ch 2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch
  • In the mosaic section:
    • There is a chart and written instructions for right-handed and left-handed crocheters
    • All FLO dc stitches are made in the front loop of the stitch two rounds below
    • Recommend using a locking stitch to eliminate gaps on the wrong side of the basket
    • Do not cut the yarn between each mosaic round. Drop the unused color and pick it back up for its next designated round.
  • Final round of trim can be made using your color of choice and is a regular sc that is also a locking stitch to eliminate the gap between the row below on the wrong side
  • For an alternate basket edge, use Color A

I just found this and THANK YOU!
I have been looking all over for something to make that really celebrates Easter the way I and my family celebrate- Passover.
We try to get out of the commercialism and pagen holidays and back into the real meaning.
Anyway- I thank you so much and hope you keep designing patterns like this!
A couple questions- Is this the whole pattern? So can I copy paste it so I can do it later as I am in pain so often from arthritis it takes me so long to crochet but is this the whole pattern? Also can I make this into a blanket- like at the bottom of it a strip across HE IS RISEN?
I am going to sign up to get your newsletter- if you have- sorry just got here and so excited to find a designer like you!
Blessings to you and your family throughout the year <3 <3 <3

Hello! So glad you found this pattern to help your family celebrate. You can absolutely use this and make it into a blanket, though you may need to repeat the pattern to ensure it is a wide enough blanket. To save it for later, feel free to save this page to Pinterest. Or you can purchase the downloadable PDF from Etsy or Ravelry and have a printable version with a chart included that you can access when you’re ready.
