Don’t you just love it when your home looks festive for a holiday? It always puts me in a good mood, and for summer I like to bring out the red, white, and blue decor. This year, this free American flag-inspired crochet table runner pattern is the perfect addition to your dining room table.
Crochet colorwork can be intimidating for some, but this July 4th crochet table runner pattern is perfect for beginners who want to practice simple color changes. With thick stripes, you won’t have very many ends to weave in, and with the entire runner made with single crochet stitches, it’s a breeze to work up.
If intarsia or tapestry crochet stars aren’t your thing, you can use the same chart to make cross-stitch stars or leave the stars off altogether. Even applique stars would be a sweet touch too!

Introducing the Heritage Table Runner Crochet Pattern
For the Heritage table runner, I used two different yarns for each version that I made. For the colorwork version, I used WeCrochet Brava Worsted, which was graciously provided as part of the summer blog hop. Thank you WeCrochet!
The dark blue and red colors are beautifully heathered and the exact richness I was looking for out of Brava Worsted. For the white, my two color choices were cream or bright white. While white would look great, in keeping with the rustic color scheme, I chose cream. It has a very prominent peach tone and I didn’t think I was going to like it, but once it mixed in with the red and blue, the peachiness toned down quite a bit.
For the cross-stitch version, I used Caron One Pound and really love how the colors worked together. Now, I need to choose which version to keep and which version to gift!
This table runner would also work well in your favorite cotton yarn for additional durability and washability.
The written instructions for this crochet table runner pattern are free to follow below. If you prefer a downloadable, printable version that you can access from anywhere, buy the premium PDF in my Etsy, Ravelry, or LoveCrafts shops.
The ad-free PDF also includes instructions on how to cross-stitch, and how to customize the size of the table runner if you want something longer or wider.

- Ch 1 at the beginning of each row doesn’t count as a stitch
- Change colors when there are still two loops on the hook for the last stitch of the color before the color change
- When changing colors from the end sections to the middle stripes, don’t cut the colors for each row. Drop the unused color when switching to the middle stripe and pick it back up when you return.
- Incorporating the stars:
- If using cross-stitch, make the entire table runner and then follow the included chart to add the stars after
- If using tapestry or intarsia crochet, follow the included chart when crocheting the end sections. You can carry the color changes in the end sections and keep the tails on the wrong side of the table runner.
- For this pattern, the wrong side is the even-numbered rows
- There are 156 total stitches in each row
- Color changes are indicated by the new color in parentheses, followed by the number of stitches.
- For example: (Color A) sc 10, (Color B) sc 4, (Color A) sc 10, Turn.
- If no color is listed before the stitches, use the same color as the previous stitches
