Three crochet USA mug rugs on a table with a glass of yellow lemonade on top of one.

Have you gotten into the mug rug craze yet? It’s ok if you haven’t, but I think this crochet mug rug pattern is just the pattern to get you hooked. Pun intended! I love designing patterns that can be used to celebrate lots of holidays and occasions.

When I was challenged by some designer friends to create a pattern that makes a great scrap yarn project, I had some leftover cotton yarn from the Race Flag Garland, and July 4th is coming up. The perfect combination would be to make some crochet mug rugs. I love how personalized they look with the USA letters cross-stitched on top, too.

This is the perfect 4th of July crochet pattern that you can make really quickly. It takes a little bit of time to cross-stitch the lettering, cut, and add the fringe, but I was able to make one of these coasters in about 1.5 hours. So, in just a few hours, you can crochet an entire set of mug rugs that are instantly ready to use.

Introducing the USA Mug Rug Crochet Pattern

Mug rugs are more than a coaster because they are typically a bit bigger, rectangular in shape, and look like miniature rugs. I like them because they hold more than just your beverage. Add in your favorite cookie or treat and it’s even sweeter! Stay tuned for the end of this post where I’ll share my favorites. You’ll have to tell me what yours are.

You’ll find this pattern beginner-friendly with basic stitches and simple color changes. The mug rug then comes to life when you cross-stitch the USA letters and add fringe.

I used eco-friendly, machine washable cotton yarn because it makes a sturdy and durable piece. You will love being able to use these year after year.

Using Color C, cut lengths of yarn 3.5-4 inches long (10.2cm). Add fringe to the left and right sides, one in each row.

Is it me, or does the pattern not match the picture? Mine is totally different…blue on the sides, not top and bottom.

Hi Judy! Hmmm, it works from the bottom up so the colored edging should be the top and bottom. Without seeing, it’s hard to say what might be going on. Perhaps try comparing gauge? As we all crochet differently, that might help!
