I love to crochet scarves, don’t you? They’re a great way to practice new stitches, create different textures, and try different color combinations without a large time (and yarn) commitment. This modern crochet scarf pattern can be customized in a number of ways to fit your style.

Crochet scarf patterns often leave room for you as the maker to adjust the size to fit your preferences or your yarn stash. The Noelle Scarf is worked in short rows, which means you can make it as long or as short as you want.

Want to try a different weight yarn? You can either adjust your gauge (if you know how to do that) so that you match the dimensions, or what I would probably do is use a heavier yarn I have in my stash and end up with a wider scarf.

This pattern was featured in the 2021 Winter Wonders Blog Hop hosted by HanJan Crochet, Itchin’ for Some Stitchin’, and Ned & Mimi.

The daily hop is over, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the patterns. Grab the Winter Wonders pattern bundle. It includes all 42 featured patterns. You’ll have gifting covered for the next few years, and be able to give yourself a pat on the back for scoring 90% off the regular price!

Introducing the Noelle Crochet Scarf Pattern

Sometimes designs come before the yarn and other times the yarn inspires the design. In this case, I had been dreaming up this scarf since last winter. I wanted to make a lightweight crochet scarf pattern that would be cozy, but able to be worn all day without being overly bulky.

Also, I love how scarves can be styled in many ways, especially if they have a lot of length to them. This scarf is long enough to be wrapped once, twice, or not at all. You could even sew the ends together and make an infinity scarf.

Endless Color Possibilities

This long, skinny, lightweight scarf uses half double crochet and single crochet stitches in a fun twist on a chevron design. My testers suggested that if you’re a beginner, you can use a single color to eliminate the colorwork and practice your chevron pattern skills. Or, you could simply make the full section in the same color for a striped chevron look.

If you’re looking to amp up the color style, use your scrap yarn for each section to make a one-of-a-kind colorful scarf. The possibilities are endless, so you might be making more than one. I’m sure you won’t mind!

About the Stitches

Before you can get started with this crochet scarf, here are some details you need to know.

I also want to say a big thank you to WeCrochet for providing the yarn for this pattern. It’s my first time working with their alpaca yarn and it is truly one of the softest yarns. Alpaca is a great alternative for anyone with allergies to wool. I will definitely be using this yarn again.

It also comes in fingering and lace weight, and the colors are stunning. There were so many great options that I had a hard time choosing.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

  • Weight 3 DK yarn in 2 colors, such as WeCrochet Alpaca Cloud DK
    • Color A: Gideon – 246 yards (100g)
    • Color B: Sophia – 246 yards (100g)
  • 7 (4.5mm) Hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Gauge: For this project, gauge is not important but for reference, it is: 16.5 st x 14.5 rows = 4″ square

Finished Dimensions: Approximately 6” wide x 78” high (15.2cm x 198.1cm)

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
  • hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together
  • st – stitch
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • rep – repeat

Pattern Notes:

  • US Terms (US to UK terminology conversion)
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of the sc rows does not count as a stitch
  • Ch 2 at the beginning of the hdc rows counts as a stitch
  • When changing colors in the middle of the row, bring the tail of the color that gets dropped to the front side of your work. That way it will be on the backside when you get ready to pick it up again.
  • When changing colors at the beginning of a new row, you can
    • Cut the yarn and start with a new piece, or
    • Loosely carry the yarn behind your work. Later, cut the strands in the middle and weave in the ends.
