Do you need a break from tedious crochet patterns, or are you looking for a simple way to add texture to your next crochet project? Sometimes relaxing crochet is the way to go, and I’m here to share one of my favorite crochet textures made from only TWO stitches. The alternate half double crochet (hdc) is a simple repeat with a twist on beginner basic stitches, making it a meditative texture that even beginners can feel confident to try.

Below I’ll walk you through all the steps to make the alternate hdc stitch. Then you can start using it for your next project.

What is the Alternate Half Double Crochet Stitch?

Before jumping into the tutorial, you are probably wondering what the alternate hdc stitch is. It’s two stitches that you repeat over and over to create the texture. The alternate half double crochet stitch is simply another way of saying “FLO hdc, BLO hdc” into the next two stitches. It is an easy 2-stitch repeat that creates a really beautiful texture that can be used in a variety of projects.

How to Get Started with the Alternate Half Double Crochet Stitch

Let’s get started making the FLO hdc, BLO hdc combination, so grab some yarn and a crochet hook. You can make these stitches with any yarn weight and a corresponding hook size. If you’re new to crochet, I recommend a worsted weight yarn and an H-8 (5mm) hook.

Steps for Making the Alternate Half Double Crochet Stitch

Step 1: Make the Foundation for a Alternate Half Double Crochet Stitch

You can use any kind of foundation for the alternate hdc stitch. To make a simple swatch, start with either a row of foundation hdc stitches, or a foundation chain plus regular hdc stitches in each chain. You can use odd or even

Step 2: Ch 2, FLO hdc, BLO hdc

To start the next row, chain 2. This counts as your first stitch in the row. Next, make a half double crochet into the Front Loop Only (FLO). Then, make a half double crochet in the Back Loop Only (BLO).

Step 4: Repeat steps 2-3 for additional rows

Continue making more rows by following steps 2 and 3 above until you complete the desired number of rows.
